Personal Knowledge Management

So a stab at creating something here!!
PKM - Knowing what you know, knowing what you do not know, but having the ability to find and fill your knowledge gaps through connections, networking and locating Subject Matter Experts, who will share their knowledge instead of horde it.
I am not really sure of what a community of one is - is this just a buzz word for someone acting on their own? Sounds non-sensical to me.
The whole point of KM is to ensure that we do not re-invent the wheel every time we identify a knowledge gap. How we achieve this is the big question - personal, collaborative, enterprise wide. Like in organisations if we cannot do the personal level well, we have no chance of upscaling this to the enterprise model. Does Personal KM refer to a single node pushing and pulling content from a community, when lots of these nodes interact, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Synergy!
If we have too many people in the community taking and not giving, then the value in that community is limited. It almost becomes a select few people using it as a soap box to spread their thoughts.
What you need is the ability to come to a reasoned response, through bouncing ideas off of one another, arguing the point and a bit of give and take.
However, there is some management involved - knowing what communities you belong to, which communities to go to and when, what information you require, who the strong people in the node are, managing your interactions and relationships with these people.
Much as we do when forming friendships, we will do this almost subconsciously, though your skill at this will depend on how often you interact and the value you bring.

Knowledge inputs / outputs from thousands knowers (also from the KnowledgeBoard community) are interacting in one’s own head – “community of one".
(My) unique “community of one” is exercising Personal KM for the job at hand, and benefits can be e.g. belief, understanding, intelligence, business value of strategic importance.
Community is “the feeling that you belong to a group and that this is a good thing”. (Macmillan English Dictionary)
This is my own “community (group) of knowledge of the past, the present and the future” creating and exploring ideas, frameworks and models, and working with many communities for new knowledge processes and assets.
Thanks,
Arturs

Hi
every appears to be hundred percent right but what is Personal in PKM is very important to understand
personal means different for different beings, depends upon his/her level of awareness
Is it not ?

We began a research in PKM earlier this year.
It is clear there are few references in academia on the subject. Most references comes from blogs, sites, foruns or magazines.
Our goal was to understand this various trends in PKM and develop an instrument to measure the adoption of PKM related concepts by individuals.
Personal efficiency (like covey etc.), personal information technologies and KM field personal activities were some of views related to managing personal knowledge we identified.
In the end, we formulated concepts and practices (90 +-) including all trends. Example: if it uses technology to suport activy X, if has a strategy to acquire knowledge it has identified as critical to personal success, if he manages relationships and so on.
We expect now test in a large sample to be able to ckeck for dimensionality, delete itens etc.
best,
Fred

PKM is one of my 10 topical themes in KM.
If people are a key resource then their knowledge and how it is used is important. So far a lot of focus has been on individual capabilities. However, in an organisation context, they have to be provided with the right environment, motivation, tools etc. to make the most of their knowledge.

As far as i'm concerned, PKM is definded by "if only I knew what I know". That includes knowing who knows ... , but is not limited to that. IMHO, adding value to items by connecting them and adding context is the main issue.
